Healthcare Video Strategy Across CTV, Online Video, and YouTube

How to assign clear jobs to CTV, online video, and YouTube in healthcare media before splitting budget, with quality, frequency, and measurement in view.

Christian Guerrero Published 3 min read Part 1 of 10

The short answer

Healthcare video budgets are often split across CTV, online video, and YouTube by habit or by what each partner pitched. A stronger approach starts by deciding what job each environment should do for the brand, then allocates money to the jobs. The environments differ in reach, targeting precision, viewing context, format, and measurement options. Those differences should drive the plan.

This anchor page introduces the video series and complements the pharma CTV advertising guide.

What each environment does well

Environment Strengths Limits
CTV and streaming Large screen, long formats, high completion, household reach Household not individual, higher cost, complex supply chain
Online video (open web) Flexible targeting, broad inventory, cross-device Quality varies widely, small players, autoplay issues
YouTube Huge reach, strong search and interest signals, own measurement tools Walled garden, limited third-party data use, policy restrictions

None is best in general. Each is best for certain jobs.

Assign jobs first

Common jobs for healthcare video include:

  • Broad awareness of a condition or treatment option.
  • Explaining something complex that needs more than a few seconds.
  • Reaching verified HCPs in a video format.
  • Reinforcing a message to people already engaged.

Write each job with its target audience and success metric. Then decide which environment fits. See CTV vs. online video and YouTube vs. open-web video.

Quality is not optional

Video supply chains are complex, and quality varies. Completion rate alone is a poor quality measure. Use a broader video quality scorecard covering viewability, invalid traffic, audibility, and context. For CTV, audit the supply chain to confirm impressions come from where they claim.

Control frequency across environments

The same household may see your ad on CTV, on a phone, and on YouTube. Without coordination, frequency piles up. See CTV frequency management and deduplicated reach.

Plan for fair balance and accessibility

Video formats must present risk information appropriately. The FDA's guidance on presenting risk information applies across formats. Make videos accessible with captions and clear audio. See accessible healthcare video creative.

Measure each job appropriately

Awareness jobs may be measured through reach and brand studies. Outcome jobs need Rx studies with comparison groups. For CTV, household-level and geographic designs are often most feasible. See incrementality testing in pharma CTV.

Special case: small audiences

Rare and specialty conditions often have audiences too small for efficient broad video. See small-audience video planning.

Practical takeaway

Write a one-page video plan with a row per job: audience, environment, success metric, and quality standard. Budget follows the jobs, not the environments.
